“If you believe what you like in the gospels, and reject what you don’t like, it is not the gospel you believe, but yourself.”   Augustine of Hippo

“God does not choose men because they are excellent, but He makes them excellent because He has chosen them.   It is not because God considers them as holy that He chooses them, but He chooses them that they might be holy.”  Jonathan Edwards

From Shakespeare’s Henry V, King Henry’s St Crispin’s Day speech.  At Agincourt, his army had been reduced to a small band of tired and weary men. They were outnumbered by the French five to one. But Henry rallies them with these words of inspiration:

“From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remember’d;
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne’er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition:

And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin’s day.”

“Before I do something I ask myself, “Would an idiot do this?”.  If he would, I don’t do that thing.”  Dwight Shrute

“Outside of a dog, a book is man’s best friend. Inside of a dog it’s too dark to read.” — Groucho Marx
